Gordon Atkinson led the push to bring drag racing to a rented Pratt and Whitney runway in the South Shore suburb of Jacques Cartier, with help from Ed Otto of NASCAR. The Alouette Motor Club of Montreal sponsored the races at what it called The Stripe, three miles east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge, near today’s Montreal Saint Hubert-Longueuil Airport on Route 3. NASCAR sanctioned the strip. Crowd control, timing, rules and organization were rough the first year and all improved in 1961. Willie Colligan won the 1961 Fall Championship in his ‘58 Chevy and earned an all-expenses-paid trip to the International Drag Championships at Daytona Beach in February 1962, where 150 entries were expected. Art Arfons held the track record at 9.12 seconds and 152.45 MPH. The lease was cancelled early, after only a couple of events in 1962.
