In September 1960 the Palmdale Optimist Club and the Antelope Valley Timing Association asked Kern County for use of a runway at Mojave Airport, also called Kern County Airport No. 7. They proposed racing on the fourth Sunday of each month, starting September 25 if approved, with trophies in 47 classes. The county said yes, and the races ran under NHRA sanction.
