Marvin Thome got permission from North Central Airlines to use one of the two taxi strips at the Mitchell Airport for a drag race on September 4, 1960, on behalf of the Palace City Cyclers Club. The city council also approved the races on condition that he get insurance. The motorcycle drag race was put on by the East Deuce Cycle Club. It was the last race of the season and drew a good crowd despite the heat.
