In 1956 drag racing ran on a runway at Sharpe Field, which newspaper ads billed as the “South’s best asphalt drag strip.” It was called Mitchell Drag Strip, almost certainly after the TB-25 Mitchell trainer the base had used to train pilots. During World War II the field trained Black pilots, and afterward it went back to the city of Tuskegee as a civilian airport. In 1960 the Uphapee Timing Association held NHRA-sanctioned races every two weeks on the 5,200-foot north-south asphalt runway on the west side of the field.
