Drag racing was going on by 1963, possibly earlier, at Craig Army Auxiliary Airfield #3, a World War II field. The Army sold the property after the war and it became Henderson Airport. Once that airport closed, its 4,000-foot runway was used for drag racing and cleaned off now and then for races. It sat just off Highway 28 beside the Alabama River and West Ferry Marina. Jerry Coley ran the strip for a few years starting around 1963. On June 2, 1963, Jack Cooley set a strip record of 12.1 seconds at 120.7 mph in his 427 Chevy. The Swedish magazine Start & Strip included it in a 1968 list of 325 U.S. drag strips. Aerial photos show what looks like the outline of an abandoned airfield at East Bank, or Miller’s Ferry, about nine miles northwest of Camden.
