The Miami-Hollywood Motorsports Park complex, with a quarter-mile drag strip and an oval, opened in March 1966, and the drag strip held its first race on November 27, 1966. Over the years it was also called Miami Speedway, Miami Speedway Park, Miami Dragway and Miami-Hollywood Speedway, among other names. It was sanctioned at different times by NHRA, starting in 1968, and IHRA. Norman W. Johnson managed it in 1968. On November 1, 1974, spectator Emmett Cline drove his car onto the track, sped down it the wrong way at 90 mph, crashed through a retaining wall and plowed into a group of spectators, killing a 12-year-old boy and injuring three others. The IHRA Winternationals ran here in 1975 and 1976. Housing crowding in on the track ended it, and the last race was December 12, 1992. The Pembroke subdivision now covers the site.

Background

The complex stood east of the Hollywood Sportatorium near 172nd Avenue and what is now Pines Boulevard. Besides the quarter-mile it had a 3/8-mile oval, and it raced under names like Miami Dragway and Miami Speedway Park.
