McGhee Tyson Airport is a public and military airport twelve miles south of Knoxville. On July 27-28, 1963, the Air National Guard allowed a two-day NHRA Southeastern regional meet on its 10,000-foot runway.

Background

The airport is named for Charles McGhee Tyson, a Navy pilot killed in World War I, and it sits in Alcoa under the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority. The Guard side of the field is home to the Tennessee Air National Guard's 134th Air Refueling Wing.
