History
This quarter-mile NHRA strip is on the old Puunene Army Airfield north of Kihei. Racers probably used the old field for impromptu drag racing as far back as the 1950s. The Valley Isle Timing Association was founded in 1963 and sponsored racing on the airfield that year. On July 27, 1969, racer Kenneth Souza was killed when his car overturned at the Puunene strip. The track’s official website said in 2016 that VITA racing was in its 42nd consecutive season, which dates continuous operation to 1974. NHRA first sanctioned the strip in 1977.
