For the season opener on May 24, ads promoted a spectator drag race pairing two cars on the half-mile, semi-banked dirt oval at the North Iowa Fairgrounds. The ads didn’t make clear whether the cars would run only the front straightaway in front of the grandstand or go all the way around, which wouldn’t really count as drag racing. Tom Hovland’s top fuel dragster, which had just won the NHRA Springnationals, was also to be on display.
