In November 1955 the Road Gents car club got preliminary approval to drag race on one of Mason City Airport’s runways, with conditions: insurance for spectators, switching runways when the wind shifted for air traffic, and entering and leaving the airport together as a group. More talks were to follow. Whether the club met the conditions and actually raced there isn’t known.

Background

Mason City Municipal Airport is six miles west of downtown, just east of Clear Lake. It's still open for general aviation, and its airline service is subsidized through the federal Essential Air Service program.
