The first quarter-mile drag race on the airstrip at Marshall Womack’s farm in Slate Shoals, eighteen miles northeast of Paris, Texas, was held on September 26, 1954. The strip was 3,000 feet long and 80 feet wide. About 150 people came to that first race, a benefit for the Civil Air Patrol sponsored jointly by the Civil Air Patrol, Texas Flying Farmers, Road Deacons Club and California Motor Club. Ten percent of the gate went to buy trophies. A second race was set for October 3. The Civil Air Patrol sponsored another on October 10, 1954, when only about ten cars took part, and one more was scheduled for October 17.
