Don Jensen said a Bakersfield coupe and roadster club held a race west of town over New Year’s weekend in January 1950. He recalled a newspaper clipping that placed the race at Maricopa. Aerial views show possible sites both southwest and northwest of town, and the southwest one looks more like an old airfield. Even so, a likelier spot than Jensen’s west-of-town location is the old airport just south of town. It had a paved runway, and an oval track sat just off the runway’s southwest end, which adds to the case that cars raced there.
