In 1959 the Marfa-Alpine Drag Strip Association ran NHRA-sanctioned drag races on a runway of the old Marfa Air Base, first every second Sunday and later in the year every third Sunday. Every class winner got a trophy. One of the first races, maybe the very first, was on March 8, 1959. Racers came from as far as El Paso and Lubbock as well as the Alpine area. Apart from a few races in the spring of 1959, no other racing at the base has been found.
