History
Brecknock Speedway, a flat half-mile dirt oval, opened in Maple Grove Park in 1937, and Albert Stauffer bought it in 1940. In 1957 he let the Friendship Motorcycle Club run eighth-mile drags inside the oval, and he paved the starting line with concrete so the bikes wouldn’t throw rocks. In 1960 local racers from the Eastern Custom Car Association asked Stauffer about turning it into a drag strip for cars, and he liked the idea. John and Roy Stauffer built a strip a fifth of a mile long and 30 feet wide, and Maple Grove Park Drag-O-Way opened in August 1962. In 1963 it was widened to 40 feet and got a dual-lane timer, and Hot Rod’s August 1963 list of NHRA tracks called it the Custom Car Association Drags. After a visit to Cecil County Dragway for ideas, the Stauffers stretched it to 4,000 feet long and 60 feet wide for 1964. Bob Eveland leased the track that year, and NHRA sanctioned it. The first NHRA national event there was in 1985, and it has been held every year since, for more than thirty years.
