Racing on a runway of Manzanar Airport ran under NHRA sanction in 1972. It may have started as early as 1970, though that hasn’t been confirmed. The airport sat east of the Manzanar Internment Camp and Highway 395, about nine miles north of Lone Pine. One old-timer said only street-legal cars ran because the track surface was rough. According to Jim Dominique, the strip closed in 1973.
