Jim Wood opened this track on May 14, 1967, just west of Manhattan and half a mile south of the city airport. The first Midwest Classic, an AHRA Grand American points race in Division 3, ran on May 4-5, 1968, and drew many top names. In August 1968 racing moved from Sunday afternoons to Saturday nights. The Classic became an annual early May event, renamed the Kansas State Drag Race Championships in 1970. The 1971 edition on May 1-2, also an AHRA Grand American regional points race, drew 12,710 spectators over two days and racers including John Wiebe, Dick Harrell and Bob Sullivan. The AHRA event returned in 1972 and 1973. On Wednesday, May 17, 1972, Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen ran a match race. The Sunflower Nationals ran in early August 1978, the twelfth year of the state championships. Roger Hammerschmidt ran the track for Wood in the 1980s, and it was called Little Apple Raceway from 1983 to 1985. Errol and Nancy Kampschroeder bought it in 1986, and by 1987 at the latest it was running eighth-mile races as Midwest Raceway.

Background

The track's neighbor, Manhattan Regional Airport, is owned by the city and sits roughly five miles from downtown. Only one Kansas airport handles more commercial traffic, and American Eagle regional jets fly from there to Chicago O'Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth.
