Eighth-mile drag races first ran at the Mandan Airport on June 6, 1998, during the Buggies-n-Blues Festival, with about 100 cars and almost 4,000 people. Later the North Dakota ABATE motorcycle group got approval to race at the airport on the last day of its three-day Wild West Bike Fest. That race, on August 8, 2004, was limited to street-legal cars and motorcycles. ABATE held another on July 17, 2005, open to any race car or bike.
