Drag racing on this abandoned airstrip began in the 1960s, possibly earlier. It stopped for a while when Sackville opened in 1968. After Sackville closed, Maitland came back in 1986 and ran through at least 1990. The revival came from Maitland Racing Ltd., which built on land held under a five-year lease and refurbished the airstrip with a $60,000 federal grant and $200,000 in private money. After the short 1986 season, fifteen local families protested the noise, but a large majority of Maitland residents spoke up for the track. It was known as Maitland International Raceway and Maitland Dragway. At a 1989 event, two couples were married on the starting line. Scott Fraser took over operations in 1992. The site is now a sod farm.
