Langley Speedway, a NASCAR 3/8-mile oval, opened in 1963. By late June 1980 it had added what it called one-on-one drag races, which proved a popular addition to the circle track program and lasted four years. On September 21, 1980, the track held its National Championship Circle Track Drag Races, where Eddie Crisp beat about two dozen rivals in a ‘62 Plymouth.

Background

Langley Speedway is a NASCAR-sanctioned short track on Commander Shepard Boulevard, across from NASA's Langley Research Center, and it races in the Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series. The turns carry only six degrees of banking, flat even by local standards. In November 1970 it hosted the final Grand National race before NASCAR renamed the series the Winston Cup.
