History
Lancaster Speedway, a half-mile dirt oval on Gunville Road, opened in 1959. In 1961 it built a paved eighth-mile drag strip next to the oval on its west side, and the first race ran August 17, 1961. In 1963 the dragway joined the Timing Association of North America (TANA), a group of New York strips with Speedland at Canandaigua, Jackson’s in South Butler, Oswego and Milray, all speedway ovals except Jackson’s. On August 7, 1975, a newly built grandstand collapsed during eliminations at a Thursday night race, injuring 22 people. After repairs, racing resumed about a week later. On Sunday night, August 17, 1975, 18-year-old David Ayers was killed when he lost control of his Mustang convertible and crashed. The dragway was IHRA sanctioned from 2000 through 2022 and switched to WDRA sanction for 2023. Over the years it has also been Lancaster Motorsports Park, Lancaster National Raceway, Dunn Tire Raceway Park and Elegant Builders Raceway Park.
