In August 1955 the Ardmore-based Slowpokes Automobile Club got Lake Murray State Park to approve a quarter-mile dirt drag strip on state land just east of the Lake Murray airstrip. The club finished the grading and set the first race for September 25, but rain pushed it to the next Sunday, October 2. Dust held down both crowds and entries, so the club coated the strip with road oil before the October 23 race, which drew forty cars, the most yet. There was no admission charge, only donations to cover costs. The 1955 season ended November 13.
