The Bakersfield Smokers Timing Association ran the first quarter-mile drag race here on September 9, 1951. That first season the races were held southwest of Bakersfield, reached by driving 25 miles south on Highway 99 to Mettler Station and then seven miles west on the Maricopa Cutoff. Racing at this spot stopped in December 1952, though one last race was held there on April 19, 1953.
