Yates Keener owned a dirt drag strip on Salem Road in Boger City by 1959, possibly near today’s Keener Road or on that road itself. The Road Angels Hot Rod Club of Gastonia ran races every Sunday, with trophies for class winners. Bubber Hoffman of Lincolnton won top eliminator on May 3, 1959 in his 1958 Impala. The Road Angels quit after six weeks because the money arrangement didn’t work. In summer 1959 C.B. Lawing of Lincolnton bought the strip from Keener and renamed it Boger City Drag Strip. It reopened July 19, 1959, with the Road Angels back under a new deal, and Dave Thomason of Gastonia won top eliminator in his C gasser. A timing light went in for the August 2 race. Before that, cars just raced each other for trophies with no clock. On August 9, Paul Johnson took three trophies in his S/SA ‘58 Chevy, for his class, top speed and top eliminator, with a 75.63 MPH run. No racing has been found in any year but 1959.
