Minneapolis promoter Frank R. Winkley came up with the idea of tying drag races to major stock car events in 1959, as stock car racing looked to cash in on drag racing’s popularity. At the Kansas State Fair, drag races ran under portable floodlights on the straightaway of the half-mile oval along with the Jayhawk 200. Time trials were set for Saturday night and eliminations for Sunday night, with trophies for class winners.
