The Jonesboro-Hodge Jaycees held the first drag race on the newly finished municipal airport runway on Sunday, February 14, 1965. More than 150 entries were expected, races were timed over a quarter mile, and trophies went to thirty class winners and three eliminators. Another race followed August 22. Dragsters weren’t allowed because the Jaycees said the facilities weren’t suitable. The 1966 season opened Sunday, May 8, at the airport south of town, with trophies for all class and eliminator winners and $180 in prize money. Charles Robinson, Ed Purt, Durwood Aldy and Lloyd Brown won the eliminators, and the next race was set for May 22. The Jaycees put the profits toward city street projects and Christmas decorations.
