E. J. Faasen built a 3,000-foot drag strip into a 2-mile road course on Bill Tuttle’s land just north of Grattan, 25 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. Work on the course began in late August 1958, with hopes of having a 4,000-foot drag strip section ready for testing by Labor Day, but there’s no confirmation that happened. NHRA sanctioned the track for some years and dropped it after a car couldn’t stop and ended up in a cornfield. In 1965 ads promoted 3-foot trophies for class winners, billed as the biggest in the Midwest. Fredrick G. Septrion was killed in time trials on Sunday, June 5, 1966. The Swedish magazine Start & Strip listed it among 325 U.S. drag strips in 1968. It was called Grattan International Speedway from 1970 to 1975. Now known as Grattan Raceway, it still runs road races for motorcycles and sports cars.
