The Huntington Cam Jammers, sponsored by the Huntington Police Department, held a drag race on a quarter-mile section of Old East Neck Road in Melville on October 24, 1954. It was the first event of its kind there, with trophies, a big crowd and 23 cars. The Huntington Station Piston Poppers, Northport Road Runners and Dix Hills Road Comets took part, and one supercharged car hit 100 MPH. NHRA’s Safety Safari came on August 14, 1955 and helped run a race.
