On May 12, 1970, Wesley Breiten and John Sillman asked the Hondo city council for permission to hold monthly drag races at the Hondo Airport. They wanted to lease a runway 150 feet wide and 5,000 feet long on the southwest side of the old base. The council agreed, and they got the strip ready for a first race on June 28 under AHRA sanction. Super stock racers billed to appear included Jerry Janke, Donna Kottler and Larry Widner. 830 spectators watched 77 entries, but rain stopped the races before many classes finished. That may have been the only race, since the council later revoked permission for drag racing at the air base.
