History

The strip opened on Memorial Day, May 28, 1978, with the island’s 8th annual Memorial Day race. The first seven had been run at the Kona airport. The County of Hawaii built the strip and still owns it, and the Big Island Auto Club ran the races. IHRA sanctioned it from 2003 to 2014, and it switched to AHRA in 2015. The Memorial Day and Labor Day races are still the biggest dates on its calendar.
