An old drag racer from Richmond said this strip opened on April 18, 1959. Before it was finished, races may have been held at the regional airport in Alleghany County. The strip may instead be what a 1964 topo map shows as an airport, now Grande Road in a housing development tucked into a small valley on the east side of Covington. A 1960 aerial photo of that airport shows what looks like a return road along its west side.
