Drag races were held on a runway at the Stephenville Airport. Beyond a few videos and scattered records, little is known about the racing.

Background

The runway belonged to Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, which the U.S. Army Air Forces built in 1941 under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement with the United Kingdom. After the base closed in 1966 the property passed to Canada and then to the province, and the airfield now runs as Stephenville International Airport.
