No records have turned up for this strip’s early years apart from photographs showing drag races on a wide runway at the Harlingen Air Base in 1960-62. The base was three miles northeast of Harlingen. Races in 1964 were NHRA sanctioned. On March 1, 1964, Floyd Head of San Antonio took top eliminator in his AA/FD, and a race on April 4, 1964, drew 5,000 spectators. The January 10, 1965, race brought a big crowd and racers from across Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico. At the time a rival strip ran in the south part of Harlingen.
