Drag races were held at the Hammond airport as early as 1957, though records are thin. From 1959 to 1961 the Ponchatoula Jaycees sponsored NHRA-sanctioned races there on the fourth Sunday of each month. The Jaycee-Hammond Lions Club sponsored a race on June 25, 1961, with Marvin Berteau as track manager, and Q-Ball Wale was entered in his Wale-Candies AA/D. Bad weather slowed Q-Ball, Albert Waits and several other fast cars on July 23, 1961. On March 16, 1954, Julius McCarroll died in a freak accident at tech inspection. He was trying to jump onto his car as someone else drove it off the scales, lost his footing and hit his head on the pavement.
