Drag races ran on a runway of the former Army Air Base two miles north of Halls. Built in 1942, the base was inactivated after the war and turned over to civilian use as Arnold Field Airport. The Memphis Rodders ran the races, usually on the fourth Sunday, and NHRA sanctioned them around 1959-60. On July 3, 1960, John Mathis, 35, was killed when he lost control and careened into a field, with 2,000 spectators watching. It was the only fatality in the six years the track had operated. After that, racing seems to have been sporadic or stopped until 1968, when it picked up again for three years before ending for good.
