Drag races were held at or near Hale Center, near Lubbock, probably starting in 1955. One race came a few weeks before a March 20, 1955, meet where class winners got trophies. The races may have used what a 1970 topo map labels Boyd Airstrip, just southwest of Hale Center, which also shows on a 1966 aerial photo.
