History

One online source says the Greer strip opened in 1954, but research shows that isn’t right. The Greer Jaycees started a hot rod club for boys in October 1957 and at the first meeting talked about buying land for a drag strip. They built a lighted strip near Apalache called the Jaycee Dragway, 120 feet wide and half a mile long, for quarter-mile racing. The first race was on Saturday night, October 25, 1958, under International Timing Association sanction. Before 3,500 fans, Norman Peace won top eliminator in his ‘55 Chevy and Cecil Curry had top speed in his dragster at 103.45 MPH. The ITA called off the November 1 meet until several improvements were made, and racing resumed on November 8. In 1959 the Jaycees spent $18,000 repaving and rebuilding the strip and brought in Bob Osiecki to help manage it. It reopened on July 18, 1959, for Saturday night racing, with 250 cars expected. The Peach Festival Drag Races began that year and became a yearly tradition. In early June 1960 Cecil Curry of Greenville set a strip record of 134.15 MPH in the Curry-Hopkins Chevy-powered A/GD. Bill Douglas of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, raised it to 160.71 MPH in his own Chevy-powered A/GD on April 22, 1961. On March 23, 1963, Curry set a world A/GD record of 8.5 seconds at 180 MPH. Huston Platt met Ed Skelton in a Chevy versus Ford match race on July 23, 1966. NHRA sanctioned the track by at least 1969. Rising speeds forced a switch from quarter-mile to eighth-mile racing in 1978, and as of 2015 it still ran as an eighth-mile strip under IHRA sanction.
