Airmen from the air base formed the Delta Angels Safety Club and held Sunday drag races on the auxiliary airstrip at Indianola, starting March 9, 1958. On July 20, 1958, they raced at the airfield between Leland and Indianola. From April 5, 1959 they raced on the first and third Sundays, since the military didn’t use the field on Sundays. The October 4, 1959 race was NHRA-sanctioned. The 1960 season opened April 3 and ran through at least early May.
