On May 30, 1969, the governor, a senator, a congressman and other officials gathered at the old air base to mark its conversion into a community, commercial and industrial center. After the ceremony that afternoon, a drag race ran on one of the runways, with more promised if there was enough interest. Holding it on a Friday afternoon probably didn’t help, and no more races followed.
