Weekly drag races started around May 1956 at the old military airport northwest of Fort Stockton. The Fort Stockton Jaycees ran them at first, and then the Fort Stockton Road Runner car club took over. The Army Air Force opened the field in 1942 as a training base. After the war it became a civil airport, now called Fort Stockton-Pecos County Airport.
