Along with its half-mile dirt oval, the speedway had a quarter-mile drag strip. It was built at the south end of the oval, running 1,440 feet off the fourth turn so it joined the home stretch, which was meant to give cars room to reach top speed and then slow down. The first drag race was held on August 19, 1956 and the second on September 9, 1956. No records of drag racing from 1957 to 1961 have turned up, though that doesn’t mean none happened. A weekly Sunday program began June 10, 1962, with trophies for class winners. In 1964 it began to be called Georgetown Dragway.
Background
Melvin L. Joseph built Georgetown Speedway in 1949, and it's known for its part in the early growth of stock car racing. The half-mile clay oval went quiet for several years and came back in May 2006.
