In January 1955 the Gaston Gear Grinders club started grading a drag strip on York Road, four miles south of Gastonia. It was reportedly near Ralph’s Barn, a popular restaurant five miles south of town on Clover Road. The quarter-mile strip had a half-mile shutdown, and the club hoped to open in April and race twice a month for trophies, with sixteen other area clubs expected to take part. Carl Hampton spoke for the club. Little else is known.
