The Empire State Timing Association started quarter-mile racing on the 4,400-foot runway at Fulton Airport in 1955, possibly as early as 1953. The first race was June 5, 1955, and monthly races usually drew more than 100 entries. The season finale, billed as the state championship, ran September 18 with trophies in 26 classes, and Tom Halen won overall in a 1933 Ford roadster with a 1954 Buick engine. A two-day NHRA regional championship on June 23-24, 1956 was moved to Fulton from Rochester when a course there wasn’t ready, though Rochester still held a parade and dance the night before. Rain kept the meet from finishing, a letdown for racers who had come from as far as Maine, Ohio and Michigan. The ESTA state championships were held at Fulton on August 12.
