The Sandblasters car club from Cannon Air Force Base ran races at the city-owned airport, which had 4,000 feet of shutdown room past the quarter-mile mark. They raced on June 2, 1957, and racers from Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico were scheduled for June 16. Races seem to have been held now and then in the 1970s, usually on Labor Day. On Sunday, June 15, 1980, 250 people watched races at the airport during the annual Old Fort Days.
