The Clearwater car club was the first in Alberta in fifteen years allowed to drag race on a public highway. Quarter-mile races ran on a stretch of Lynton Road ten miles south of town, a road that bypassed the airport on the way to the Lynton rail yard. The strip had a small hill at the end. At a June 1977 race, 600 spectators paid $2 each to watch Garry Whitfield take King of the Hill in his Roadrunner. Timing was done with makeshift equipment, and a fire truck and ambulance were always on hand. The club hoped to hold six races in 1977.
