The first drag races at the airport were held in February 1957, sponsored by the Kingsmen’s Club of Flagler Beach and supervised by NASCAR. From May 1957 races ran on the second and fourth Sundays. Hyler Craft set a track record of 122.449 mph in his Pontiac-powered dragster on January 5, 1958. During the NASCAR International Safety and Performance Trials, drag races ran here every night from February 15 to 22, 1958, alongside the measured-mile runs on Daytona Beach. Speed Week drag races were held here again in 1959 and 1960. In 1960 NHRA held its first Winternationals here, combined with NASCAR’s event. Class winners got marble trophies, and Rick Goodsell has a photo of one.
