In the early 1960s a three-quarter-mile concrete drag strip was built on Albert Fischer’s farm southwest of Pilot Point. His son Jerry remembered all kinds of people coming out on Sundays to race. Old railroad ties were sunk along the side of the strip with heavy steel cable strung between them, so a car that got away from its driver wouldn’t hit anyone standing by the track. People stood along the edge or sat in their cars to watch, and plenty of them raced too. As drag racing’s popularity faded, the strip was left to the weeds. In the early 1970s Jerry Fischer fixed it up as a private landing strip for planes.
