The South Texas Hotrod Association had been running drag races for some time, possibly since 1952, at an airport landing strip just east of Faysville. It was ten miles north of Edinburg, southeast of the Hargill turnoff on Highway 281. Insurance concerns kept the public out until the club got coverage for spectators, and the first race open to fans was set for February 22, 1953. Spectators watched from a roped-off area. Cars made single timed runs, with no side-by-side racing.
