This was Fayetteville’s second drag strip, not counting Easy Street in nearby Newton Grove. Little is known about how it started. News reports often placed it behind the airport and said it was 5,000 feet long. It was first called the Fayetteville-Cumberland Dragway and later Cumberland International Drag Strip. A big funny car show began in 1969 and ran every year through at least 1974. The three-day North Carolina State Drag Racing Championships were held October 9-11, 1970, and the Dixie Pro Stock Championships on Sunday, April 11, 1971. The track had lights for night racing, and the North Carolina Fuel Funny Car Championships ran Friday night, September 3, 1971, growing to a two-day, sixteen-car show in 1972. On May 5, 1972, eight women pro stock drivers, Bunny Burkett among them, raced for the title Miss Universe of Drag Racing. Old-timers remember a very narrow strip running northwest, with pine trees nearly to the edge and the pits in among the pines. It was IHRA sanctioned in the 1980s, and Rickie Smith set the pro stock record of 8.16 at 170 MPH at an IHRA points meet on August 15, 1982. It ran under IHRA sanction as Fayetteville Motorsports Park Dragway until it closed after the 2025 season.
