Farmington police quietly tolerated unsupervised, unsanctioned drag racing on a stretch of old Highway 550 two miles west of town, which newspapers always called a drag strip. The San Juan Basin Timing Association ran a few organized races there, but most of the racing was unsupervised, and it certainly went on before 1957. The highway was closed to drag racing after two motorcyclists, L.E. “Popeye” Hester and Dairl Peterson, were killed racing there on May 29, 1957. In 1958 the Shaundos and Roadrunners car clubs, working with the State Police, ran organized races every Sunday from at least July, on Harper Hill just north of the new Kirtland highway about 2.5 miles west of Farmington. About 35 cars came each week. Spectators paid $1 a car and racers 50 cents to cover trophies. In 1964 the Four Corners Timing Association held races on the bluffs south of Farmington.
