On July 10, 1955, the Nemaha Valley Timing Association tried to hold a drag race on an unused road near Salem, and sheriff’s officers shut it down. The club hadn’t asked permission, and though the road went nowhere and the public didn’t use it, the State Highway Department still maintained it. The NVTA got permission before racing in 1956. Its strip was on a 150-acre farm four miles south of Verdon, north of the Salem depot and about five miles northwest of Falls City. The club held a regional drag championship there on October 7, 1956 and a midwest regional on November 11, 1956. The 1957 season opened April 28. That year the farm was going to be sold to a man who objected to the strip, so Marion Boatman, a manufacturer, bought it himself to keep the racing going.
